10th Annual Bailey Scholars Program
Colloquy on Teaching and Learning

"Learning to Change; Changing to Learn:  Reforming the University"
Featuring John Tagg

The Liberty Hyde Bailey Scholars Program cordially invites you to the 10th annual Bailey Scholars Colloquy on Teaching and Learning in Higher Education kicking off the program’s 10th celebratory year. We are pleased to have John Tagg of Palomar College and author of The Learning Paradigm College speaking on “Learning to Change; Changing to Learn: Reforming the University: A Colloquy on the Learning Paradigm.” The Learning Paradigm emphasizes student learning instead of teaching and creating environments that optimize learning. In his book, John  Tagg asserts that units within colleges striving to embrace the Learning Paradigm frequently and consistently:

  • Support students in pursuing their own goals
  • Require frequent student performances
  • Utilize frequent and ongoing feedback
  • Assure a long time horizon for learning
  • Provide for stable communities of practice
  • Aligns all of its activities around the mission of producing student learning

We proudly announce two opportunities to engage with John Tagg and other students, faculty, staff, and university community members:

First, on Thursday January 17 @ 6PM in the McDonel Residence Hall Kiva (first floor) we will be hosting a dialogue about the learning paradigm, calling for a redesign of higher education in the service of learning. This talk lead by Mr. Tagg will give audience members an opportunity to share their learning experiences and engage in dialogue of how to increase learning (organizationally and personally) in the collegiate environment.

Second, on Friday January 18th registration open at 9:30 AM , opening remarks at 10 AM, and further small group conversations from 10:30 AM until 1PM with lunch included in the ***CHANGE*** the Holmes Hall Special Dining Room (The Spartan Room). The small group conversations will focus on current best practices and ways to implement the learning paradigm into current practice. RSVP to this event is required (lhbailey@msu.edu). Space is limited and requests will be honored on a first come, first served basis.

We look forward to seeing everyone at the annual colloquy!

This event represents part of the 10th Anniversary of the Bailey Scholars Program at Michigan State University.  The Colloquy is sponsored by the Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education, the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Vice President of Student Affairs and Services, The Office of Cultural and Academic Transitions, and the LBGT Resource Center.
